The creation of this mask began with an in-depth study of the visual traditions of European demonology. We examined original sources - old engravings, illustrations from theological treatises, and imagery from ecclesiastical polemics, where demons were depicted as embodiments of fear, pain, and temptation. The figure of the plague doctor offered a way to connect themes of illness and spiritual anxiety that were central to Europe during times of epidemic.

The mask is handcrafted from vegetable-tanned leather. The engraving draws on motifs from classical sources - the Dictionnaire Infernal, the Lemegeton, and the work of artists who operated within the tradition of moralistic printmaking. The design was first developed digitally based on archival examples, then transferred to leather using precise laser engraving, followed by hand finishing to enhance depth and texture.

The entire process was guided by a historical perspective. Our goal was not to reproduce a specific artifact, but to convey the atmosphere of a time when the boundary between the physical and the metaphysical felt particularly thin.

The engraving on the mask serves a conceptual purpose. It develops the symbolic dimension historically associated with the figure of the plague doctor. During times of epidemic, this figure was seen not only as a form of protection but also as a ritual presence. People believed that illness carried more than a physical threat - it also suggested an intrusion of unseen forces. The demonological motifs reflect that perception - a fear that could not be explained by medical reasoning alone.

Each element of the design is based on authentic sources - illustrations from grimoires, the symbolic language of medieval treatises, engravings in which the demon’s body reflects inner distortion, spiritual deviation, or invisible intrusion. Such images were associated with epidemics, affliction, and punishment. Their presence on the mask creates a connection to a worldview where illness was understood as a disruption of cosmic or moral order.

This engraving is not decorative. It allows the mask to be seen not simply as a costume element, but as an object that captures a cultural response to fear.
